Peptides vs Steroids: Different Machinery

Peptides and anabolic steroids are frequently discussed together and work in fundamentally different ways.

Steroids act on a receptor inside the cell

Anabolic steroids are lipid-based hormones. They cross the cell membrane, bind the androgen receptor inside, and that complex acts directly on DNA to change which proteins get made.

Direct, powerful, and systemic: androgen receptors exist throughout the body, which is why side effects reach hair, skin, prostate, lipids and mood.

Peptides are signals

Peptides are short amino acid chains. Most cannot cross the cell membrane and instead bind receptors on the surface, triggering a cascade inside.

They are signalling molecules, generally asking a system to do more of something it already does. That is why they are more targeted and why their effects are usually subtler.

What that means practically

Suppression. Steroids suppress natural testosterone production, unavoidably. Most peptides do not touch that axis at all, which is why they need no recovery protocol.

Magnitude. Steroids produce larger, faster changes in body composition. Nothing in the peptide category competes on that, and claims otherwise are marketing.

Administration. Peptides are destroyed by digestion, so injection or nasal delivery is required, which is why 5-Amino-1MQ, being a small molecule, is unusual in being oral.

Evidence. Steroids have decades of research. Many peptides have animal data and little else. See BPC-157.

The overlap

Growth hormone sits between them. It is a peptide hormone with steroid-like magnitude, which is why HGH and the secretagogues get discussed in both conversations.

Choosing between them

Different questions. Repair, sleep, inflammation or cellular energy point to peptides. Substantial body composition change points to hormones and their attendant costs.
