Nootropic Peptides: Semax, Selank and the Rest
The nootropic peptides come almost entirely from Russian research, and that shapes both what they do and how confidently anyone can talk about them.
Semax: focus
Semax is derived from ACTH with the hormonal activity removed. Reported effects are focus, clarity and reduced mental fatigue, without the adrenergic character of a stimulant.
Selank: calm
Selank is a tuftsin analogue used for anxiety without sedation. The appeal is calm that does not dull cognition or carry dependence risk.
The two are frequently run together because the effects are complementary rather than overlapping.
The BDNF thread
Both are associated with increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor, involved in neuronal growth and plasticity. That is the mechanistic link between a focusing compound and a calming one.
Where the others sit
DSIP targets sleep quality rather than cognition directly, though sleep is upstream of everything cognitive.
NAD+ approaches mental energy through cellular metabolism rather than neurotransmission, a different route to an overlapping outcome.
Modafinil is not a peptide and works differently again: it removes tiredness rather than enhancing cognition, and it carries a real sleep-debt trade.
The evidence problem, stated plainly
The Russian clinical literature is real: these are used medically there, but it is older, not widely replicated in Western journals, and not subject to the trial standards people assume when they hear “clinically used”.
That is a genuine limitation rather than a conspiracy, and it should temper expectations rather than dismiss the compounds.
Nasal delivery
Both Selank and Semax are commonly used intranasally, since they are small enough to cross the nasal mucosa. See nasal vs injectable for the general trade-off.
