Selank and Semax: Calm and Focus
Selank and Semax are both Russian nootropic peptides and they do different jobs. One is for anxiety, the other for focus.
Selank: the anxiolytic
Selank is a synthetic analogue of tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune peptide. Its reputation is for reducing anxiety without sedation.
That distinction is the appeal. Conventional anxiolytics tend to trade calm for dulled cognition and carry dependence risk; Selank’s reported profile is calm without either. It has been used clinically in Russia for anxiety disorders for years.
Semax: the stimulant that is not a stimulant
Semax is derived from ACTH but stripped of the hormonal activity, leaving the neurological effects.
Reported effects centre on focus, mental clarity and reduced fatigue, without the adrenergic character of caffeine or a true stimulant. No jitter, no crash, no elevated heart rate. It is used in Russia in stroke and cognitive impairment contexts.
The shared mechanism
Both are associated with increased BDNF: brain-derived neurotrophic factor, involved in neuronal growth and plasticity. That is the mechanistic thread linking a calming peptide and a focusing one, and it is why they are frequently run together.
Nasal versus injection
Both are commonly used intranasally, which is unusual in this category. The peptides are small enough to cross the nasal mucosa, and that route puts them closer to the target tissue.
Injection works too. The choice is largely practical.
The evidence question
The research is real but almost entirely Russian, older, and not widely replicated in Western literature. That is a genuine limitation rather than a conspiracy, these compounds have simply not been through the trial process that would let anyone speak confidently.
Where they fit
Selank where anxiety is the problem and sedation is not acceptable. Semax where focus and mental fatigue are. Both are outside the performance category entirely. They do nothing for training, and nothing here interacts with the compounds covered in oral steroids compared.
Both are supplied as vials, so see reconstitution and bacteriostatic water.
