DSIP: Named for a Function It May Not Perform
DSIP is named for a function it may not actually perform. Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide was identified in sleeping rabbits, and the name has outlived the certainty behind it.
What it is
DSIP is a nine-amino-acid peptide isolated in the 1970s from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in induced sleep. The naming followed the circumstance of discovery rather than a demonstrated mechanism.
The sleep evidence is mixed
This is the honest position. Some studies report improved sleep onset and quality; others find no significant effect. It is not a reliable sedative and does not act like one, people expecting something that puts them to sleep are usually disappointed.
Where reports are more consistent is sleep quality rather than sleep onset: less fragmented sleep rather than falling asleep faster.
The other reported effects
DSIP has been studied for stress response, pain perception and withdrawal symptoms, with results that are interesting rather than conclusive. It appears to interact with several systems rather than having one clean mechanism, which is part of why it has resisted straightforward characterisation for fifty years.
How it compares to melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone that signals darkness and shifts circadian timing. It is well characterised, cheap and effective for what it does, particularly circadian problems like shift work or jet lag.
DSIP is not a circadian signal and does not do that job. If the problem is timing, melatonin is the more appropriate tool; if the problem is fragmented sleep despite good timing, DSIP is the more interesting one.
Why sleep matters here at all
Growth hormone release is heavily sleep-dependent, concentrated in slow-wave sleep. Anyone running GH secretagogues while sleeping badly is working against themselves, which is why sleep comes up so often in this context.
Where it fits
Worth exploring for sleep quality, with realistic expectations and an understanding that the evidence is genuinely mixed. Supplied as a vial. See reconstitution and bacteriostatic water.
Supplied for research purposes only.
