SS-31 (Elamipretide): Targeting the Mitochondria
SS-31 targets the mitochondria specifically, which is what separates it from the broader longevity compounds.
What it is
SS-31 is elamipretide, a four-amino-acid peptide that accumulates in the inner mitochondrial membrane. It binds cardiolipin, a phospholipid found almost exclusively there.
That specificity is the point: most compounds act broadly, while SS-31 concentrates where it works.
Why cardiolipin matters
Cardiolipin holds the electron transport chain in the right configuration. When it becomes damaged, through age or oxidative stress, energy production becomes less efficient and produces more reactive oxygen species, which damages more cardiolipin.
SS-31 is proposed to stabilise cardiolipin and interrupt that cycle. It is a plausible mechanism for a genuine problem.
Where the research sits
Elamipretide has been through real clinical trials: more than most compounds in this category: in mitochondrial myopathy, heart failure and Barth syndrome. Results have been mixed, with some endpoints met and others not.
That is a more developed evidence base than epitalon has, and worth weighing accordingly.
How it differs from NAD+
NAD+ approaches cellular energy by supplying a depleted cofactor. SS-31 approaches it by protecting the machinery that uses it.
Different targets, same broad goal. See NAD+ and MOTS-c, and 5-Amino-1MQ for the third approach.
Where it fits
Interest in mitochondrial function, fatigue, or endurance capacity, from someone who wants a compound with actual clinical data behind it. Supplied as a vial. See reconstitution and bacteriostatic water.
Supplied for research purposes only.
