MK-677 vs Injectable Secretagogues
MK-677 is the only oral option in the growth hormone conversation, which is most of its appeal. It is not growth hormone, and it is not quite the same as the injectable secretagogues either.
What MK-677 actually is
MK-677 (ibutamoren) is an orally active ghrelin receptor agonist. Like the injectable secretagogues, it prompts your own pituitary to release growth hormone rather than supplying the hormone itself. Unlike them, it is a tablet and it has a long half-life, roughly a day, so once-daily dosing is the norm.
Versus ipamorelin and CJC-1295
Duration is the headline difference. Ipamorelin produces a sharp pulse and clears quickly, which broadly mimics natural GH release. MK-677 raises levels over a much longer window, which is less like the natural pattern.
Whether that matters depends on your view of pulsatility. The argument for short-acting injectables is that mimicking the natural rhythm is part of the point; the argument for MK-677 is that it is a tablet you take once a day. See ipamorelin and CJC-1295 for the injectable side.
Selectivity differs too. Ipamorelin is specifically noted for leaving cortisol and prolactin largely alone. MK-677 acts on the same ghrelin receptor that drives appetite, which is why a substantial increase in hunger is the most consistently reported effect. Some people want that; if you are cutting, you very much do not.
Versus actual growth hormone
Somatropin is exogenous hormone at a fixed dose. Everything in this article is a secretagogue, the response depends on your own pituitary and is self-limiting. Cheaper, milder, and dependent on a system that works. HGH kits, pens and secretagogues compared covers the full split.
The practical trade-offs
MK-677: oral, once daily, no injecting, long duration. Appetite increase is the near-universal report, water retention and lethargy are common, and it is the least “natural rhythm” of the options.
Injectable secretagogues: closer to natural pulsatility, more selective, no appetite hit: at the cost of injecting, and more often than once a day for the short-acting ones.
