Testosterone Esters Compared: Enanthate, Cypionate, Propionate

📅 June 21, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

Testosterone is testosterone. Enanthate, cypionate, propionate and the blends all deliver the same hormone: what changes is the ester attached to it, and the ester decides how fast it releases and how often you need to inject.

What an ester actually does

An ester is a chain attached to the testosterone molecule. It does not change the hormone; it changes solubility. A longer chain releases more slowly from the injection site, which stretches the half-life and flattens the peak.

That is the entire difference. A gram of enanthate and a gram of propionate contain slightly different amounts of actual testosterone by weight, because the ester itself has mass, but it is the same hormone once cleaved.

The common esters

Propionate, shortest of the common esters. Fast release, short half-life, frequent injections. Levels rise and fall quickly, which some people prefer for control and others find inconvenient.

Enanthate, the workhorse. Longer chain, longer half-life, typically injected once or twice weekly. Stable levels with far fewer injections than propionate.

Cypionate, almost identical to enanthate in practice. One extra carbon, a marginally longer half-life. People argue about the difference; in real terms they are interchangeable.

Undecanoate, very long ester, used where infrequent dosing matters. Usually chosen for TRT-style protocols rather than shorter cycles.

Isocaproate, phenylpropionate and decanoate, mostly seen inside blends rather than on their own.

Blends: Sustanon and Test 400

A blend combines several esters so a short ester covers the early days while a long ester holds the back end. Sustanon 250 is the classic four-ester version.

Test 400 is a different idea, a high-concentration blend at 400mg/ml rather than the usual 250. Fewer millilitres for the same milligrams, which is the appeal, though the higher concentration needs more solvent and is commonly reported as harsher to inject.

Choosing between them

If injection frequency matters, enanthate or cypionate. One or two per week, stable levels, minimal fuss. This is the sensible default.

If you want tighter control, propionate, you feel changes faster and clear it faster, at the cost of injecting far more often.

Blends make sense if you want coverage without thinking about it, and less sense if you want to know exactly what is in your system at a given point.

What the ester does not change

It does not change how aromatising the compound is, what side effects to expect, or what support you need alongside it. Those come from the hormone, not the chain. Estrogen management and post-cycle planning are the same conversation regardless of ester. See SERMs vs aromatase inhibitors.
