T3 and T4: Overriding a System You Cannot Easily Restore

📅 July 19, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

T3 and T4 are thyroid hormones, and using them to lose fat means deliberately overriding a system your body regulates carefully. That is a meaningfully different proposition from most things in this category.

What they are

T4 (levothyroxine) is the storage form the thyroid mostly produces. It is relatively inactive until converted.

T3 (liothyronine) is the active hormone. It is what actually drives metabolic rate, and it is what T4 becomes.

The body converts T4 to T3 as needed, which is a regulated process. Taking T3 directly bypasses that regulation entirely.

Why people use them

Thyroid hormone raises metabolic rate, and the fat loss effect is real and larger than a stimulant like clenbuterol produces.

That is the appeal. It is also the problem.

The muscle loss issue

Elevated T3 raises the rate at which the body breaks down tissue, and it does not restrict that to fat. Muscle loss on T3 is a well-documented concern, not a theoretical one.

This is why T3 is almost always discussed alongside anabolic compounds: not because they combine well conceptually, but because something has to offset the catabolic effect.

Suppression of your own thyroid

The thyroid axis responds to exogenous hormone the way the testosterone axis does, by producing less. Extended use suppresses natural output, and recovery is not always quick or complete.

That is the risk people underweight. A temporary fat loss tool can leave a permanent dependency, and thyroid replacement is a lifelong medication rather than a cycle.

This is genuinely a medical area

Thyroid dysfunction is diagnosed with blood tests and managed by clinicians for good reason. Symptoms of over-replacement: palpitations, heat intolerance, anxiety, tremor, arrhythmia, overlap with plenty of other things and are not safe to self-assess.

Anyone considering thyroid hormone should have actual thyroid bloodwork first, and anyone with a diagnosed thyroid condition should not be self-managing it. This is not a compound where the usual “run it and see” approach is reasonable.

The honest comparison

For fat loss specifically, the GLP-1 compounds achieve more with a far better safety profile and without touching an endocrine axis you cannot easily restore. See semaglutide vs tirzepatide vs retatrutide.
