Cabergoline and Prolactin: Test First

📅 July 11, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

Cabergoline addresses prolactin, and prolactin is a problem that only some compounds cause. Knowing whether you actually have that problem is the difference between a useful tool and an unnecessary one.

What prolactin has to do with anything

Prolactin is a pituitary hormone. Elevated, it can cause reduced libido, difficulty with erections, and in some cases lactation and breast tissue changes that look like gynecomastia but are not oestrogen-driven.

That last point is the important one, because it explains why people run an aromatase inhibitor at the problem, get nowhere, and conclude the AI is fake.

Which compounds raise it

The progestogenic compounds. Nandrolone is the standing example, and trenbolone is the other. See trenbolone acetate vs enanthate.

Testosterone, the DHT derivatives and the dry compounds do not present this problem. If you are running masteron and a testosterone base and something feels wrong, prolactin is unlikely to be the explanation.

How cabergoline works

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist. Dopamine suppresses prolactin release, so raising dopamine activity lowers prolactin.

It is effective and long-acting, which is why it displaced older options for this purpose.

Do not run it blind

This is the whole message. Cabergoline is not a preventative to take alongside a nandrolone cycle by default.

Prolactin is a simple, cheap blood test. Driving prolactin below normal in someone whose prolactin was fine produces its own set of problems, and dopamine agonists carry side effects of their own, including nausea, dizziness and, at clinical doses used for other conditions, more serious concerns.

Test, then treat if the number says so. Do not treat a symptom you have assumed the cause of.

Prolactin versus oestrogen symptoms

The two overlap enough to be routinely confused. Both can present as low libido and breast tissue changes.

Bloodwork separates them, and the treatments are completely different: an aromatase inhibitor or a SERM for oestrogen, a dopamine agonist for prolactin. Guessing wrong wastes weeks and leaves the actual problem running.

Where it fits

On a nandrolone or trenbolone cycle, in someone with symptoms, with a prolactin result confirming the cause. Not as a default addition, and not as a substitute for oestrogen management. See PCT explained.
