Clomid vs Nolvadex: Which SERM

📅 July 11, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

Clomid and nolvadex are both SERMs and both restart natural testosterone production, but they are not equivalent, and the difference is mostly about side effects.

How a SERM restarts production

Both compounds block oestrogen receptors at the hypothalamus and pituitary. Those receptors are where the body senses oestrogen and decides to suppress LH and FSH.

Block them and the brain reads oestrogen as low, releases LH and FSH, and the testes are told to produce again. That is recovery, and it is why an aromatase inhibitor cannot do this job, since lowering oestrogen systemically is not the same as blocking the receptor that reports it. See SERMs vs aromatase inhibitors.

Nolvadex (tamoxifen)

Tamoxifen is generally the better-tolerated of the two and is effective at restarting the axis.

It has a second use that clomid does not share: it blocks oestrogen receptors in breast tissue, which makes it the tool for gynecomastia specifically. An AI lowers circulating oestrogen; tamoxifen blocks the receptor where the problem is actually happening.

Clomid (clomiphene)

Clomid is the stronger stimulator of LH output, which is why it persists in recovery protocols despite being the less comfortable option.

Its drawback is well documented and worth taking seriously: mood disturbance and visual side effects, blurring, floaters, light sensitivity. Not everyone gets them, but they are common enough that clomid has a genuine reputation for making people feel unwell during a period when they already feel flat.

Why they are often run together

The two are frequently combined, using clomid’s stronger stimulation alongside tamoxifen’s tolerability rather than pushing either one hard alone.

Whether that is necessary depends on what was run and for how long. A short, mild cycle rarely needs the heavier approach; a long run on suppressive compounds like nandrolone often does.

Timing matters more than choice

Starting recovery while a long ester is still releasing wastes the attempt, you are stimulating an axis that exogenous hormone is still suppressing.

Time it from when the slowest compound has actually cleared, not from the last injection. Sustanon is the classic trap here because its decanoate component outlasts the rest by a wide margin, and testosterone esters compared sets out the clearance differences.

Where HCG fits

HCG works on the testes directly rather than on the brain, which makes it a different tool used at a different point, usually before a SERM protocol rather than during one. HCG explained covers it.

The short version

Tamoxifen for tolerability and for gynecomastia specifically. Clomid for stronger stimulation, accepting the mood and visual risk. Both for a heavier recovery. And bloodwork afterwards, because “feeling recovered” is not evidence that the axis actually restarted.
