HCG Explained: On Cycle, Before PCT, and Fertility

📅 June 24, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

HCG is not a steroid, not a SERM, and not part of PCT, though it is constantly described as all three. It mimics luteinising hormone, which makes it a maintenance tool rather than a recovery one.

What it actually does

Human chorionic gonadotropin is structurally similar enough to LH that the testes respond to it as though it were LH. That means it acts directly on the testes, downstream of the pituitary.

That distinction is the whole point. A SERM works at the hypothalamus to restart your own LH production. HCG replaces the LH signal entirely, so while you are using it, the axis above it stays quiet.

Why it is used on cycle

Suppression during a cycle means little or no LH, and the testes respond to disuse by atrophying. HCG maintains that signal, which is why it is commonly run alongside a cycle rather than after it.

Preventing atrophy is easier than reversing it. That is the practical argument for running it during rather than starting it at the end.

Why it is the wrong tool for PCT

This is the mistake worth naming. If the goal of PCT is to restart your own production, supplying an external LH-mimic works against it, you are still telling the system it does not need to produce its own signal.

The conventional sequence is HCG during the cycle or tapering off before PCT starts, then SERMs to restart the axis once it has cleared. Running both simultaneously is common and counterproductive. See SERMs vs aromatase inhibitors.

Fertility

The same mechanism explains the fertility use. Where suppression has reduced spermatogenesis, restoring the LH signal is the first lever, and HMG is sometimes used alongside because it supplies FSH activity that HCG does not.

Both are stocked in fertility and libido support.

Handling

HCG is supplied lyophilised and needs reconstituting before use, and once in solution it is refrigerated with a limited window. It is less forgiving than most peptides on this point. Storing peptides properly covers the reconstitution step.
