Dianabol (Methandienone): The Classic Kickstart
Dianabol is the oldest trick in the book and it still works. Methandienone predates almost everything else people run, and it remains popular for one reason: it does something noticeable within days.
What it is
Dianabol is methandienone, a 17-alpha-alkylated oral. Unlike the DHT-derived orals it does aromatise, and that single property explains most of its character.
Why the gains look so fast
A substantial part of early dianabol weight is water. Aromatisation raises oestrogen, oestrogen brings fluid retention, and fluid retention shows up on the scale immediately.
That is not a criticism: the strength increase is real, and training in a well-hydrated state is genuinely productive. But it means the number on the scale overstates what you keep, and a chunk of it leaves when the compound does. Anyone comparing dianabol to a dry oral like anavar on scale movement alone is comparing two different things.
Oestrogen has to be managed
Because it aromatises, dianabol carries the oestrogenic side effects the dry orals do not: fluid retention, blood pressure, and gynecomastia risk in those susceptible.
This is the compound where an aromatase inhibitor is actually the right tool, as opposed to the compounds where people reach for one out of habit. Aromatase inhibitors compared covers the options and SERMs vs AIs covers why they are not interchangeable.
Liver and blood pressure
Alkylated, so hepatotoxic, so short runs. Blood pressure deserves particular attention here because the water retention compounds the effect. This is one of the compounds where people notice pressure symptoms rather than only seeing them on a monitor.
The kickstart pattern
Dianabol is most often used at the front of a longer injectable cycle, covering the weeks before a long ester reaches steady state. That is a sensible use of a fast oral and a slow injectable together. See orals vs injectables and testosterone esters compared.
Where it fits
Dianabol suits a short kickstart alongside a testosterone base, with oestrogen control available and blood pressure watched. It does not suit a cut, and it does not suit anyone who will be disappointed when some of the weight leaves with the compound.
