IGF-1 LR3: Downstream of Growth Hormone

📅 July 24, 2026 ⏱️ 2 min read ✍️ Team TPS

IGF-1 is the hormone that actually does most of what people credit growth hormone with. GH largely works by telling the liver to produce it.

What it is

IGF-1 is insulin-like growth factor 1. The LR3 variant carries modifications that dramatically extend its half-life: native IGF-1 is bound and cleared within minutes, while LR3 resists binding proteins and stays active far longer.

That modification is what makes it practical at all.

Why it sits downstream of GH

Growth hormone is a signal. Much of what it is credited with, tissue growth, repair, the anabolic effects, is mediated by IGF-1 produced in response to it.

Using IGF-1 directly skips the signalling step. That is the appeal and also the concern: you are bypassing a regulated feedback loop rather than nudging it. Compare HGH kits, pens and secretagogues, where the whole spectrum runs from “ask the pituitary nicely” to “supply the hormone directly”.

The hypoglycaemia risk

This is the thing that matters most. IGF-1 has genuine insulin-like activity and can lower blood glucose meaningfully.

Hypoglycaemia is not a theoretical side effect here. It is the primary acute risk, and it can be serious. Anyone using IGF-1 needs to understand the symptoms and have fast-acting carbohydrate available. This is not a compound to be casual about.

The growth question

IGF-1 promotes growth broadly. It does not distinguish between tissue you want and tissue you do not, which is the basis of the long-standing concern about promoting existing abnormal growth.

There is no settled human data resolving that for performance use, and anyone with a family history worth taking seriously should factor it in.

Where it fits

An advanced compound with a real acute risk attached, used by people who understand hypoglycaemia and manage it. Not a starting point, and not something to combine casually with insulin.
