SARMs: The Selectivity Is Not That Clean

📅 August 13, 2026 ⏱️ 2 min read ✍️ Team TPS

SARMs were designed to separate the tissue-building effects of androgens from everything else, and the separation is far less clean than the name implies.

The idea

Selective androgen receptor modulators bind the androgen receptor but act differently in different tissues: strongly in muscle and bone, weakly in prostate, skin and hair follicles.

If that worked perfectly you would get the anabolic effect without the androgenic side effects. It was a genuinely good idea and it produced real pharmaceutical interest.

Why it is not that clean

Selectivity is relative, not absolute. SARMs still suppress natural testosterone production, frequently substantially, which is the claim most often misrepresented.

Anyone told a SARM needs no recovery protocol has been misinformed. The suppression is real and the recovery conversation applies. See PCT explained.

Liver strain is also reported with several of them, and lipid effects, particularly HDL suppression, are consistent and sometimes severe. That places them closer to oral compounds than the marketing suggests.

What is not a SARM

Several compounds sold in the category are not SARMs at all. Cardarine is a PPAR-delta agonist. MK-677 is a growth hormone secretagogue.

Neither binds androgen receptors. Grouping them together confuses mechanisms that have nothing in common.

The quality problem

Independent analyses have repeatedly found products sold as SARMs containing different compounds, wrong amounts, or nothing at all. That is a documented issue in this specific category and it makes provenance more important than usual. See spotting counterfeits.

The honest position

SARMs occupy an awkward middle: weaker than the compounds they are compared to, not free of the side effects they were meant to avoid, and with less long-term human data than either steroids or the better-studied peptides.
