Injection Pain: Usually the Oil, Not the Hormone

📅 August 1, 2026 ⏱️ 2 min read ✍️ Team TPS

Most injection pain comes from the carrier oil and the concentration, not from the hormone. That is useful, because both are things you can change.

What the oil is doing

Anabolic compounds are not water-soluble, so they are dissolved in oil. The oil is the vehicle and it is a large part of the experience.

Common carriers include grapeseed, cottonseed, sesame and MCT. Thinner oils inject more easily; thicker ones need a larger needle or more patience. Sensitivity to a specific oil is real and individual, someone who reacts badly to one preparation may be fine with the same compound in another.

Concentration and solvents

This is the bigger factor. High-concentration preparations need more solvent, benzyl alcohol and benzyl benzoate, to keep the hormone dissolved.

Benzyl benzoate in particular is associated with post-injection irritation. A 400mg/ml preparation like test 400 requires considerably more of it than a 250mg/ml one, which is why higher concentrations have a reputation for stinging.

If injections hurt, dropping to a lower concentration of the same compound often solves it entirely.

Compounds with their own reputation

DHB is the standing example, painful enough that people abandon it despite rating the results. Injectable winstrol is suspended rather than dissolved, which is a different and generally worse experience.

Technique that actually helps

Warm the vial in your hands, warm oil flows more easily. Use a fine needle to inject and a separate wider one to draw, since drawing blunts a needle. Inject slowly; pushing 2ml in quickly stretches tissue and that is a real cause of soreness. Relax the muscle.

And rotate sites properly. See injection sites and rotation.

Pain versus infection

Soreness that peaks around 24-48 hours and settles is normal. Redness that spreads, heat, swelling, throbbing, or fever is not, and it warrants medical attention rather than waiting.
