Proviron (Mesterolone): A Support Compound
Proviron is not really a steroid you run for growth. It is a support compound, and it does its job through free testosterone rather than through anything anabolic.
What mesterolone does
Proviron is mesterolone, an orally active DHT derivative. Its anabolic contribution is minimal and nobody uses it for tissue.
What it does do is bind strongly to sex hormone binding globulin. SHBG is what holds testosterone in circulation in an unusable, bound state; occupying it leaves a greater share of the testosterone already present free and active.
So proviron does not add hormone. It makes more of what is there available.
Why it gets used alongside other compounds
Two reasons come up consistently.
Free testosterone. On a cycle where SHBG is elevated, freeing bound testosterone makes the base work harder without increasing the amount.
A mild anti-oestrogenic effect. Mesterolone competes at the aromatase enzyme, which is why it gets discussed as a light alternative to an AI. Treat that carefully. It is not a replacement for one on a cycle that genuinely needs oestrogen control. Aromatase inhibitors compared covers the real tools.
The hardening reputation
Users often report a firmer look on proviron. Some of that is the mild anti-oestrogenic effect reducing fluid; some is simply having more free androgen circulating on a lean physique.
As with masteron, it flatters a physique that is already lean and does almost nothing visible on one that is not.
It is not liver-friendly by default
Proviron is often described as gentle because it is not 17-alpha-alkylated in the usual sense. It is still an oral compound processed by the liver, and it still affects lipids. “Milder than superdrol” describes almost everything. See superdrol for the other end of that scale.
Suppression
Mesterolone is suppressive. It is a poor choice as a standalone or as something to run through a recovery period, which is a use that occasionally gets suggested and does not make sense. See PCT explained.
Where it fits
As a support compound alongside a testosterone base, on someone lean, where high SHBG is limiting how much of that base is actually usable. Not as a primary compound, and not as a substitute for oestrogen control.
