Pen or Vial: Which Format Suits You

The same compound is often available as a pre-filled pen and as a vial, and the choice changes more than convenience.

What a vial asks of you

A vial of lyophilised powder needs reconstituting. You choose the water, you choose the volume, and that volume sets the concentration for every dose afterwards. See reconstitution and bacteriostatic water.

Then you draw by eye into an insulin syringe. For compounds used in small amounts, small absolute errors are large proportional ones.

What a pen removes

No reconstitution, no volume decision, no drawing by eye. The cartridge arrives sealed at a fixed concentration and the dial clicks in defined increments.

The in-solution clock does not start until first use, which is a real advantage over a vial you reconstituted and must now finish.

What a pen costs you

Control over concentration. A vial lets you mix stronger or weaker to suit; a pen arrives as it arrives.

Pens are also generally more expensive per milligram, because you are paying for the device.

The unit trap

Counterfeiting

A vial is easy to source, fill and label. A pen is a manufactured mechanical device, and per-unit serialisation makes it individually traceable, a considerably higher barrier. See spotting counterfeits.

Pen for a first peptide, for anything used in small amounts, and for anyone who wants fewer ways to go wrong. Vial for cost, for control over concentration, and for compounds not offered as pens.
