Does Anavar Need PCT? And Does It Raise Testosterone?

📅 August 19, 2026 ⏱️ 3 min read ✍️ Team TPS

Yes, Anavar suppresses, and yes, it needs a recovery plan. The idea that it is mild enough to skip both is the most persistent piece of bad advice attached to it.

Does Anavar increase testosterone?

No, it lowers it. This is the most common misunderstanding.

Anavar is an androgen, so androgenic activity in the body goes up while you take it. But your own production goes down, because the body senses adequate androgen and stops signalling for more. Blood tests during a run typically show suppressed natural testosterone.

The androgen present is the one you supplied. When you stop, you are left with whatever your own system has resumed producing, which is why the exit matters.

How suppressive is it

Less than a heavy injectable cycle, more than nothing, and more than its reputation implies. Studies of oxandrolone show meaningful suppression of natural production even at modest amounts.

“Mild” describes the side effects people notice, not the ones they do not. Lipids are hit disproportionately hard, and that produces no symptoms at all. See cholesterol and lipids on cycle.

So do you need PCT?

For a short, low run in someone recovering well, some people find natural production returns without intervention. For anything longer, or repeated, a SERM protocol is the sensible answer.

A SERM blocks oestrogen receptors at the hypothalamus and pituitary, which restarts LH and FSH output. See clomid vs nolvadex and SERMs vs aromatase inhibitors.

An aromatase inhibitor is not PCT. It manages oestrogen while compounds are running; it does not restart anything.

Anavar does not aromatise

Being a DHT derivative, it does not convert to oestrogen, so an AI is generally unnecessary during the run itself. Where it can still matter is a testosterone base running alongside it.

The honest test

Do not judge recovery by how you feel. LH, FSH and total testosterone several weeks after finishing tells you whether the axis actually restarted. See bloodwork: what to test.
